What do you want?

“What do you want?  This is a very simple, yet powerful question.  What is the first thing that came to you?

Knowing what you want is the first step in discovering who you are, and in living a more fulfilled life.  In my coaching it is always the first question I ask.  A lot of people tell me they don’t know.  I occasionally ask them, “If you did know what you wanted what would it be?”  Surprisingly, some people then state what they want.

They do so because we all KNOW what we want, but at times we are unable to access this information because of our limiting beliefs, our inner critic, and our desire to please or not disappoint other people.

Knowing what you want is important because we receive what we most think about.  Here’s an example.  When you have a song stuck in your head you normally hear it on the radio within a day.  You hear it because you are focusing on that particular song.  You are attuned to that sound and when it plays you recognize it.  I always smile when that happens.

Let’s see if we can discover what if anything is blocking you.  I am now going to ask the question again.  When you hear it, I want you to be aware of what is going inside you.

Okay, “What do you want?”  Now answer these 3 questions:

What do you believe will keep you from getting what you want?
What did your inner critic say to you about what want?
Who did you immediately think of when you stated what you wanted?

In the future I will talk about how to overcome these barriers.

This week I challenge you to take 5 minutes a day to complete the following sentence, I want….
Write the entire 5 minutes.  Some of your wants may be mundane – Brush my teeth daily or profound I want to be a world-class-athlete. Do not censor yourself, and   don’t think about what others want for you or how what you want will affect others.  Spend these 5 precious moments with yourself clarifying what YOU want.

Remember everyday provides you another opportunity to excel.  You can do it!!!
